Animation in film started in the early 1900s as lightbox animation, and today a lot of animated film is created through computers. But how did this change occur?

Animated films started as early as 1906. The first, “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces,” was made through drawings on paper and negatively shot back through film. For a long time shorts and eventually full movies were created with hand drawn images, slightly altered and put together to create a look of movement.

All the way until the 1980s, this was the only way of animating movies that did not include real world people or objects. Computers were just starting to become popular in the ’80s, and the first fully computer animated film released in 1986. “Luxo Jr” was created with the ‘Pixar Image Computer,’ which used new scanning techniques to eliminate the process of redrawing images. From then on, computer animation became a new technique that created a totally different visual experience.

Animation through computer software did not actually make the lengthy animation process any shorter, but it did open a door for future animation and started a market that would be worth hundreds of billions of dollars only around thirty years later.

How Technology is Changing the Dating Game

     These days technology plays a role in our everyday lives and impacts nearly everything under the sun. From food, shopping, and gaming to research, blogging, and even dating. Online dating sites have entirely transformed the dating world. Digital match-making has broken down boundaries and perhaps is causing stronger and longer-lasting relationships. 

     30 years ago, the average response to “How did you guys meet?” was either from a family member or a friend introducing the two people. According to a Stanford study, in 1990 nearly 35% of couples met through friends and nearly 0% met on the internet. In 2000, 10% of opposite-sex couples and 20% of same-sex couples met online. When Tinder was introduced to the world in 2012, the percentage of spouses who met online dramatically rose to 29% of opposite-sex couples and 65% of same-sex couples. Today, around 40% of heterosexual relationships meet online. The number of relationships initiated by friends or family is actively decreasing. 


     Today there are 50 million people on Tinder and 2 billion swipes per day. There are 1 million tinder dates every week. Surveys show that ⅓ of the couples in the United States have met online.

      Online dating systems have tremendous advantages including finding someone who shares common interests or beliefs and the number of potential partners. Even if you are picky and have a very particular taste, the larger selection increases the possibility of finding someone who suits you.

      The amount of interracial marriages who met online is increasingly on the rise. According to the author Alia Hoyt, 15% of new marriages were interracial in 2009. After Tinder was launched in 2012, the percentage of interracial marriages jumped to 17%. 


    Online dating apps supposedly build stronger relationships than meeting through friends or family. Study has shown that couples who meet online are more likely to get married sooner than couples who meet offline. Married couples who meet online have a higher chance of staying together. One study by the author Peggy Drexler:

“According to the study, the rate of marital breakups for respondents who met their spouse online was 25% lower than for those who met offline. The researchers suggested that a greater pool of potential spouses might give users more options and allow them to be more selective.”

The ability to hypothetically “shop” for a spouse online has entirely revolutionized dating and marriage. It builds stronger, long-term relationships at a much faster rate than ever seen before.

Technology in sports has evolved in the past decades but there have been even more advancements over the past few years. Some new innovations in the sports industry are the technologically advanced soccer balls and the wearable vest system. 

The Adidas Telstar 18 is the official ball of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, which is the most technologically advanced World Cup ball in history. The Telstar 18 is a high-tech ball with an innovation that you can’t see. Each ball is embedded with an NFC (near-field communication) chip that allows interaction with the ball via a smartphone. The technology does not measure the ball’s speed, height or curl which could be coming very soon in the future. This high-performance piece of sports equipment represents a baby step into the digital age and sets the groundwork for the type of technology to be incorporated into future World Cups.

This company along with many others have built the first generation of wearable performance monitoring platforms, that can give athletes key information. Future generations of wearable devices will have features with additional movement and biometric tracking to give an even better prediction about performance outcomes.

Should everyone drive an electric car?

Innovations have made electric cars a much better option for the average driver. The cost has come down in line with gas-powered cars. This frequently happens as new technology becomes more mainstream. Entrepreneurs, like Elon Musk, have paved the way in technology. Tesla was the first popular electric car. Nowadays, more and more car companies are coming out with their own version of an electric car. Some companies have even stated they would turn all-electric in a  few years.


Using an electric car is better for the environment. You do not need gasoline and would not be emitting carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are bad for the environment. There is much less maintenance on an electric engine. No need to worry about an oil change every few months. This means electric cars are less expensive to own and you could get a tax credit in some states. Due to this new technology, these cars are quieter and provide a smoother ride.


A major disadvantage is having to find a charging station when your battery gets low. Electric cars do have a good mile range but you cannot pull into the nearest gas station to fill up your tank. Once you find a charging station, the charging time can be time-consuming. These two factors do not fit well when you are in a time crunch.

Advances in battery technology over the past few years have resulted in a lighter car and longer-lasting charge. In addition, electric cars include the latest smartphone technology and navigation technology making them appealing to younger drivers who demand a car that fully integrates with their lives. Many people believe that we are at a turning point where the sale of electric vehicles will finally pass that of gas-powered cars!

Technology has revolutionized the world of art in incredible ways. Digital Art museums, 3D Printed Sculptures, interactive art, and more, have redefined the ways we see the possibilities in art. However, the ceramics industry is experiencing its own creative changes to the traditional practice. The use of technology, specifically 3D printing and EM waves, has revolutionized ceramicists’ ability to create and mass produce art in countless ways.

Curt Hammerly, for example, has used 3D printing as a way to both experiment with new designs as well as create plaster casts for slip casting (a method of creating ceramic pieces by pouring liquid clay into a plaster mold). By 3D printing his pieces in order to make them into molds, he can perfect his design and also mass produce them. Traditionally, the ceramic making process requires high amounts of energy (think: firing pieces to thousands of degrees). However, Reeja Jayan, a mechanical engineer at Carnegie Mellon University, is currently researching ways to cut the energy used in the ceramic making process. Through her research, she hopes to find ways to use EM waves (what is used in microwaves to warm food) to heat ceramics while slashing the energy used. Through her research and education, students across the country can be inspired to innovate in the arts field.

Not a long time ago, in order to shop, people had to actually get out of their houses and go to a store. Nowadays, people can shop while sitting on their couch at the same time. Technology is changing our everyday lives. How? It has created a great dependence on it. People need their smartphones to do almost everything, which is why they always carry it with them.

Think about the first thing you do when you get to a friend’s house or a restaurant you have never been to before. What do you ask for? I can speak from experience that I, and most of my friends, ask for the wifi password. Being connected has become so “vital” to our existence that we want to remain in touch with the world at all times. Not a long time ago, people had to wait days to get current news, but now, we have access to information at our fingertips.

Take Google Maps for example. A few years ago, people used maps to navigate cities. These allowed people to get lost, since they were sometimes very complicated. Now, interactive maps on smartphones facilitate transportation, tracking the exact route people have to take in order to get to their destination. They even predict the arrival time of the person! I for one always use Google Maps when leaving my house, even if I already know how to get to my destination. I now cannot imagine a life without Google Maps or Waze.

Need a ride somewhere? Not even 20 years ago, people had to spot and call a taxi in order to get from one place to another. Since 2009, Uber has impacted transportation to an extent that has even prompted protests in various places around the globe. It has created new job opportunities, which have replaced others, and it has entirely revolutionized car and taxi services, making it easier to gain access to safe and easy transportation.

How Technology Has Impacted Healthcare Through the Mass Digitization of Data

Technology has grown the healthcare industry, improving accessibility and accuracy. Hospitals have moved towards using EHRs or Electronic Health records, instead of paper records. EHRs are efficient, organized and can be accessed from everywhere. Furthermore nurses and technicians are in charge of putting in all patient data including “vital signs, weight, test results, etc. into a digitized system.” EHRs are also commonly used by medical billers and coders to “[schedule] appointments, [update] patient records with diagnostic codes, and [submit] medical claims.” Electronic Healthcare Records can also make doctors aware of potential hazards, such as the patient being allergic to certain medicine. It provides huge amounts of data to medical researchers and healthcare companies. Hospitals can easily share the data, using a technology known as “cloud computing.” Cloud Computing is a safe way to store and distribute the huge amounts of data involved in patient records. Patients and doctors have the ability to access data from anywhere in the world. The “cloud” has many benefits including: “reducing healthcare costs, predicting epidemics, avoiding preventable deaths, improving quality of life, reducing healthcare wastage, improving efficiency and quality of care and developing new drugs and treatments.”

Although there is many advantages to medical technology in healthcare , there are dangers associated with it.  Having data centralized is useful, but if you are over dependent on it and are unable to access the data because of connectivity problems, there can be serious repercussions.  However, the main concern is security and data protection. Hackers can steal medical records which can be used to create fake IDs, to buy medical equipment or drugs or submit invalid medical claims. The benefits of the impact technology on healthcare overall outweigh the disadvantages.
